πŸ‘‹ Aloha πŸ‘‹

3rdWAVE is a 3-stage virtual project featuring members of the 3rd (old) and 4th (new) Collective Studio cohorts.

Join us as we ride the endless waves of the internet.

It’s a follow-up to the SCRAMBLE group exhibition in March by the 3rd cohort and a way to connect with the 4th cohort who start their programme in October. The aim is to foster a cross-pollination of ideas and establish a dialogue between the cohorts. It was planned as a real-life exhibition, but as it’s not possible it’s going ahead a little differently right here. Hopefully it forms the basis for real-life activity in the future.

SCRAMBLE opened right at the beginning of the pandemic, which disrupted some of the momentum we had gained as a group. Here we reconnect in the same (virtual) space and explore our new circumstances and perspectives as artists.

πŸ’» How it works πŸ–₯

For a smooth ride, please surf via a computer or tablet.

Each surfer on the homepage links to a unique webpage, which will be populated with layers of work by old and new Collective Studio artists. Visitors can move around the work on each webpage (except videos), just hold and drag! Make your own arrangements and send a screenshot to Will. Who knows what could be hiding in the depths of each page...

Because some pages are full to the brim with so much high quality stuff, they may take a moment to load fully.

You can think of it all unfolding like this:

1. Scramble Reflection
    2. Response from the New Cohort
        3. Cohorts Collaborate

Work is added to the site in three WAVES from Oct-Dec 2020:

1st WAVE 🌊
Scramblers are invited to submit a response to the work they made for the Scramble exhibition, reflecting upon how their practice has changed since. This could be a fragment, echo, sketch, diagram, blueprint, plan, scrap, photocopy, collage, remix, continuation, recontextualisation, parody, review of the original the work. The more gnarly and radical the better.

2nd WAVE 🌊🌊
Members of the new Collective Studio cohort are allocated a 1st Wave work and make something in response. The new work is presented alongside the corresponding 1st Wave work.

3rd WAVE 🌊🌊🌊
New Collective Studio-ers are grouped with the author of the 1st Wave work they made something in response to during the 2nd Wave. The groups work together to add to their previous works. Participants completed an ice-breaking idea-generation workshop, in which they got to know eachother and mapped a route for their collaborative works.

Thanks to Sue Loughlin and Jessica Bennett who organised the original SCRAMBLE exhibition. Thanks to Dan Russell for helping me develop the project and run the zoom workshop. Thanks to Dan Goodman for discussing my initial concept.

The Collective Studio is a creative development programme for early-career artists of all disciplines. It provides studios, workshops and a chance to meet other artists. It’s run by the Newbridge Project and supported by Newcastle University.

You can’t stop the waves, but you can learn to surf.
